The Big 12 men’s basketball standings are quite messy as teams are five games in.
There are 11 of the 14 teams who either have a 3-2 or 2-3 record in league play, while there is one team below that mark and two above it. In total, 13 of the 14 teams are currently within two games of the first place position in the standings.
4-1 Teams
There are only two teams who are 4-1 in league play — Texas Tech and Kansas State. Tech’s only loss has come against Houston, while the Red Raiders battled to get a win against BYU at home on Saturday. Kansas State’s only loss in Big 12 play is to Texas Tech, and the Wildcats took down Baylor earlier this week. KSU’s schedule gets quite tough over the next four games with trips to Houston and Iowa State, as well as a home matchup against Oklahoma. Tech’s schedule isn’t easy either as three of their next four are on the road.
3-2 Teams
Here is the middle of the league, where 11 teams stand at 3-2 or 2-3. Out of the 11, five of these teams are 3-2, and all five are ranked. No. 4 Houston is 3-2, with their dropping back-to-back games on the road, before having two dominant wins at home this past week. No. 7 Kansas fell to West Virginia on Saturday, after the Jayhawks were on a two-game winning streak. No. 11 Oklahoma went 2-0 this week, and returns home for two more against Texas and Texas Tech this week in Norman. No. 16 Baylor went 0-2 last week, losing to both Kansas State and Texas on the road by a combined seven points. Lastly, No. 23 Iowa State went 1-1 this week, losing on the road to BYU, but coming back for a one-point win over TCU on the road on Saturday.
2-3 Teams
With five teams at 3-2, that leaves six teams at 2-3. BYU, Cincinnati, TCU, Texas, UCF, and West Virginia, are all 2-3 in league play. Out of that group, TCU is the only team who did not pick up a win this week, going 0-2. Texas beat Baylor, and West Virginia beat Kansas on Saturday. The other three teams all lost on Saturday.
0-5 Team
Lastly is Oklahoma State, who is currently 0-5 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys looked poised to get their first Big 12 win on the road Saturday against Kansas State, but they couldn’t close the door on the Wildcats. Oklahoma State will face TCU and West Virginia at home as they try and get their first Big 12 win of the season this week.
