As No. 3 Kansas heads to Morgantown on Saturday afternoon to face the Mountaineers, the Jayhawks’ head coach Bill Self spoke on West Virginia as an opponent as well as the coaching transition which has taken place.
On WVU’s Roster
Self made note that the Mountaineers are still without all of the pieces they thought they would have heading into this year. Self said they have the potential to be a really good team when healthy.
“I’m going to gauge it on since they’ve had their full complement of guys and they still haven’t had it because Edwards has been hurt,” Self said on how he sees the Mountaineers.
“I think getting those guys eligible and then if Edwards is able to go, he’s a legitimate a top fie big man in the country potentially. It’s hard to gauge in large part because they haven’t had their full cast of guys. Certainly when they do have all their players, they’ll be very formidable for anybody. You take away them playing without guys that are capable combined to get you 40 points per g game, obviously it looks a lot different.”
Coaching Transition
Self was good friends with former head coach Bob Huggins, even being a guest speaker at Bob Huggins’ Fish Fry charity event. Self jokingly said interim head coach Josh Eilert will be better dressed than Huggins on Saturday, but also gave credit to both coaches.
Self then spoke of both coaches saying he hopes Huggins is remembered in the correct way and that Eilert has done well with the hand he was dealt.
“I really want him to be remembered and thought of in a way that he’s provided a great legacy to our profession and I wish our best for him. That’s not to say I wish that at the expense at anybody else either,” Self said of Huggins.
“I think Josh has done a good job in a hard situation. That’s not easy. then you throw off I haven’t had my two or three starters for the entire season at least. That’s a hard deal. It’ll be different, but it’s not going to be something that I think about a lot.”
Tip off for West Virginia vs Kansas is set for 4 p.m. from the WVU Coliseum on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
