Big 12 Women’s Basketball Weekly Recap — January 12

We are now two weeks into Big 12 Conference play and the Big 12 has been one of the best conferences in women’s college basketball.

In the latest AP Poll, the Big 12 has four teams represented in it, with those teams being Baylor at fourth, Texas at 10th, Kansas State at 12th, and West Virginia at 24th. The Big 12 also has TCU receiving votes.

As of games through Jan. 11 every single team in the conference has a winning record, joining the Pac-12 as the only conferences in the nation to accomplish this feat.

Let’s take a look at each Big 12 team and how they fared in games over the last week. This list is sorted alphabetically.

No. 4 Baylor (14-1, 3-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Baylor won at home against Houston 87-58. Baylor has had a high flying attack all season on offense and scored at least 85 points for the seventh time this season.

Baylor followed that game up with their first loss of the season, an 87-66 loss to unranked Kansas this past Wednesday. Baylor was one of three unbeatens remaining and allowed their most points in a game this season in the loss.

Up next for Baylor is a road game against Iowa State on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a home game against UCF on Saturday, Jan. 20.

BYU (10-7, 0-4 Big 12)

Last Saturday, BYU lost at home to Iowa State 80-75. BYU led late in the third quarter, but Iowa State had a strong fourth quarter to propel the Cyclones to victory.

BYU followed that game up with a 79-69 road loss to Houston this past Wednesday. BYU was better than Houston in a bunch of team statistics, but Houston was in control for the duration of this game.

Up next for BYU is a home game against Cincinnati on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a road game against Oklahoma State on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Cincinnati (9-6, 1-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Cincinnati lost on the road to Oklahoma 77-64. Cincinnati was good in the second and third quarters but better first and fourth quarters from Oklahoma propelled the Sooners to victory.

Cincinnati followed that game up with a 64-63 home win against UCF. The game was tightly contested throughout, and Cincinnati won it on a game-winning layup in the final seconds of the game.

Up next for Cincinnati is a road game against BYU on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a home game against No. 24 West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Houston (10-5, 1-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Houston lost on the road to Baylor 87-58. The Cougars have scored less than 60 points in four out its five losses this season.

Houston followed that game up with a 79-69 home win over BYU this past Wednesday. BYU was better than Houston in a bunch of team statistics, but Houston was in control for the duration of this game.

Up next for Houston is a home game against TCU on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a road game against No. 24 West Virginia on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Iowa State (11-4, 4-0 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Iowa State won on the road at BYU 80-75. BYU led late in the third quarter, but Iowa State had a strong fourth quarter to propel the Cyclones to victory.

Iowa State followed that game up with a 74-64 home upset win over No. 24 West Virginia this past Wednesday. West Virginia led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before Iowa State rallied to win the game.

Up next for Iowa State is a home game against No. 4 Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a road game against Texas Tech on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Kansas (8-7, 1-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Kansas lost on the road at Texas Tech 73-64. The loss was the Jayhawks’ third straight to begin conference play.

Kansas followed that game up with an 87-66 upset home win over No. 4 Baylor this past Wednesday. Their 87 points scored were the most that Baylor had given up in a game this season.

Up next for Kansas is a home game against Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a road game against No. 10 Texas on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

No. 12 Kansas State (16-1, 4-0 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Kansas State won on the road at UCF 72-56. Kansas State only trailed early in the first quarter and was in control for the duration of the game.

Kansas State followed that game up with a 74-57 home win against Oklahoma this past Wednesday. The win was their ninth straight on the season.

Up next for Kansas State is a home game against No. 10 Texas in a Top 15 showdown on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a road game against TCU on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Oklahoma (9-6, 3-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Oklahoma won at home against Cincinnati 77-64. Cincinnati was good in the second and third quarters but better first and fourth quarters from Oklahoma propelled the Sooners to victory.

Oklahoma followed that game up with a 74-57 road loss to Kansas State this past Wednesday. Oklahoma had a good first quarter, but it was all Kansas State from there.

Up next for Oklahoma is a home game against Texas Tech on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a road game against Houston on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Oklahoma State (10-5, 3-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Oklahoma State won on the road against then ranked TCU 67-59. The only time Oklahoma State trailed in this one was early in the first quarter.

Oklahoma State followed that game up with a 71-58 home win against Texas Tech this past Wednesday. Oklahoma State was in control for the duration of this game.

Up next for Oklahoma State is a road game against Kansas on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a home game against BYU on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

TCU (14-3, 1-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, TCU lost at home to Oklahoma State 67-59, dropping them out of the AP Poll. The only time TCU led was early in the first quarter as Oklahoma State was in control for this one.

TCU followed that game up with a 72-60 road loss to Texas this past Wednesday. The loss was the Horned Frogs’ third straight after starting out 14-0.

Up next for TCU is a road game against Houston on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a home game against No. 12 Kansas State on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

No. 10 Texas (16-1, 3-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Texas won on the road at West Virginia 70-49. The win was the Longhorns’ second of the season against a ranked team.

Texas followed that game up with a 72-60 home win against TCU this past Wednesday. The game was mostly contested throughout until Texas pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Up next for Texas is a road game against No. 12 Kansas State in a Top 15 showdown on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a home game against Kansas on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Texas Tech (13-4, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Texas Tech won at home against Kansas 73-64. The game was tightly contested throughout as neither team led by more than 10 points.

Texas Tech followed that game up with a 71-58 road loss to Oklahoma State this past Wednesday. Oklahoma State was in control for the duration of this game.

Up next for Texas Tech is a road game against Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a home game against Iowa State on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

UCF (9-5, 0-4 Big 12)

Last Saturday, UCF lost at home to No. 12 Kansas State 72-56. UCF only led early in the first quarter and Kansas State was in control for the duration of the game.

UCF followed that game up with a 64-63 road loss to Cincinnati this past Wednesday. The game was tightly contested throughout, and Cincinnati won it on a game-winning layup in the final seconds of the game.

Up next for UCF is a home game against No. 24 West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a road game against No. 4 Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 20.

No. 24 West Virginia (13-2, 2-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, West Virginia lost at home to No. 10 Texas 70-49. The loss was the Mountaineers’ first of the season.

West Virginia followed that game with a 74-64 road loss to Iowa State this past Wednesday. West Virginia led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter, but Iowa State rallied to hand West Virginia its second straight loss.

Up next for West Virginia is a road game against UCF on Saturday, Jan. 13. After that is a home game against Houston on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
