No. 25 West Virginia Women’s Basketball opened up Big 12 Conference play with an 85-60 win over Kansas on Saturday at the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.
Kylee Blacksten opened up the scoring with a 3-point shot, and after a back-and-forth affair, West Virginia (12-0, 1-0 Big 12) led 14-12 after one quarter.
The Mountaineers outscored the Jayhawks 24-13 in the second quarter to lead 38-25 at the break.
Kansas opened the third quarter making a pair of 3-point shots, but West Virginia managed to keep pace and went on a 6-0 run at one point that led to Kansas calling timeout with 3:12 left in the third quarter trailing 58-42.
West Virginia’s Jordan Harrison exited after a collision on a charging foul from Kansas’s S’mya Nichols late in the third, but West Virginia ultimately outscored Kansas 24-19 in the third quarter to lead 62-44.
Harrison later returned in the fourth quarter after Kansas called timeout with 8:18 left in the fourth trailing 65-51. She helped West Virginia outscore Kansas 23-16 in the fourth quarter to seal the 85-60 victory.
Jordan Harrison led the Mountaineers in points with a season-high 21. JJ Quinerly was second on the team with 13 points.
Holly Kersgieter paced the Jayhawks with 19 points. Taiyanna Jackson was second on the team with 13 points.
Kyah Watson led West Virginia in rebounds with a season-high 11. Taiyanna Jackson led Kansas in rebounds with 10.
West Virginia shot 54 percent from the field compared to Kansas’s 43 percent. West Virginia also outrebounded Kansas 34-28.
West Virginia now moves to 12-0 on the season, with their next matchup being their conference home opener against Cincinnati on Wednesday, January 3.
