It has been a quiet week of college basketball with the Christmas holiday just passing by but the Big 12 continues to make its case as the best conference in college basketball.
In the latest AP Poll, the Big 12 has once again a nation-high six teams represented in it, with those teams being Kansas at second, Houston at third, Oklahoma at 12th, BYU at 14th, Baylor at 17th, and Texas at 21st. The Big 12 also has Iowa State receiving votes.
As of games through December 27, the Big 12 has one of the three undefeated teams remaining in college basketball in Houston. With every team having played at least 11 games, 10 of the 14 Big 12 teams have two or fewer losses.
West Virginia picked up a win this past week, but they still remain the only Big 12 team without a winning record.
Let’s take a look at each Big 12 team and how they have fared in games from December 21 through December 27. This list is sorted alphabetically.
No. 17 Baylor (10-2)
Back-to-back losses hurt Baylor in the AP Poll this week but at least they won a get-right game against Mississippi Valley State 107-48 on Friday in the final game at the Farrell Center.
Baylor will play their first game at their new home venue, Foster Pavilion, for their final nonconference game against Cornell on Tuesday, January 2.
No. 14 BYU (11-1)
BYU rose up three spots in the AP Poll after winning on Friday against Bellarmine 101-59. This marks the third time this season in which BYU has cracked the 100-point barrier in a single game.
BYU closes out nonconference play on Saturday, December 30 against Wyoming at home.
Cincinnati (10-2)
Cincinnati added another win to its win total with an 83-75 home win against Stetson last Friday.
Cincinnati closes out nonconference play with a home game against Evansville on Friday, December 29.
No. 3 Houston (12-0)
Houston added another win to its undefeated start with a 72-37 home win over Texas State. The 37 points were the second fewest that Houston has allowed in a game this season.
Houston closes out nonconference play with a home game against Penn on Saturday, December 30.
Iowa State (10-2)
Iowa State added another win to the win column with an 80-48 home win over Eastern Illinois last Thursday. They have won by double digits in all but one game this season so far.
Iowa State closes out nonconference play with a home game against New Hampshire on Sunday, December 31.
No. 2 Kansas (11-1)
Kansas stayed at number two in the AP Poll this week and later got a home win last Friday against Yale 75-60.
Kansas closes out nonconference play with a neutral site game against Wichita State on Saturday, December 30 in Kansas City.
Kansas State (9-3)
Kansas State added another win to its win column with a 69-60 neutral site win against Wichita State in Kansas City.
Kansas State closes out nonconference play with a home game against Chicago State on Tuesday, January 2.
No. 12 Oklahoma (10-1)
Oklahoma slipped from seventh to 12th in the AP Poll after they took their first loss of the season against North Carolina last Wednesday. They were off this past week.
Oklahoma still has two nonconference games remaining, both at home. They host Central Arkansas on Thursday, December 28, then Monmouth on Sunday, December 31.
Oklahoma State (6-5)
Oklahoma State was off this past week, but they have managed to rebound after a rough start to the season.
Oklahoma State still has two nonconference games remaining, both at home. They host South Carolina State on Sunday, December 31, then Chicago State on Wednesday, January 3.
TCU (10-2)
This past weekend, TCU participated in the Diamond Head Classic out in Hawaii. They beat Old Dominion 111-87 in the quarterfinals, lost to Nevada 88-75 in the semifinals, then won against Hawaii in the 3rd place game 65-51.
TCU closes out nonconference play with a home game against Texas A&M-Commerce on Monday, January 1.
No. 21 Texas (9-2)
Texas did slip from 19th to 21st in the AP Poll, but they got a home win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 71-55 last Friday.
Texas still has two nonconference games remaining, both at home. They host UNC Greensboro on Friday, December 29, then UT Arlington on Monday, January 1.
Texas Tech (9-2)
Texas Tech added another win to its win column with a 77-66 home win against UT Arlington last Thursday.
Texas Tech still has two nonconference games remaining, both at home. They host Sam Houston on Thursday, December 28, then North Alabama on Monday, January 1.
UCF (8-3)
UCF added another win to its win column with a 69-56 home win against Florida A&M last Thursday.
UCF closes out nonconference play with a home game against Bethune-Cookman on Friday, December 29.
West Virginia (5-7)
West Virginia added another win to its win column with a 91-81 win against Toledo last Saturday. West Virginia is starting to get some pieces back after struggling with depth early in the season.
West Virginia closes out nonconference play with a neutral site game against Ohio State in the Legends of Basketball Showcase in Cleveland on Saturday, December 30.
