Duke’s Mayo Bowl Keys To Victory

WVU Football RB Jahiem White TD run

West Virginia and North Carolina, both with a record of 8-4, will face off in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Wednesday in Charlotte.

North Carolina will be without quarterback Drake Maye as he prepares for the NFL draft.

Find Offensive Rhythm Early

After not having played in over a month, both teams may have trouble finding their rhythms.

For West Virginia, they will be without center Zach Frazier, who has been a staple in the offense for some time now.

If WVU can find an offensive rhythm early, momentum can come into play provoking the defense to play their best and cause UNC to stall early.

The Mountaineers can rely on younger guys like Jahiem White and Traylon Ray to make spark plays while more experienced guys such as Doug Nester and Devin Carter keep the composure.

Keep QB Uncomfortable

Redshirt Freshman Conner Harrell will be under center for the Tar Heels on Wednesday, having limited experience in college.

Harrell has not hesitated to leave the pocket and take it himself. The Mountaineers will need to keep him contained.

This season, Harrell completed four passes on six attempts for 71 yards and a touchdown, while adding 50 rushing yards on five attempts and another touchdown.

If West Virginia can create pressure and not allow Harrell time, the young quarterback may not find a groove.

Limit Mistakes

Some players will find themselves on the field more frequently and some for the first time this season. Those players will have no room for error, with every play being that more crucial in the last game of the season.

In Bowl games, teams have been known to take more risks. If properly executed the risks may pay off, but if not they could put either team in a hole.

Limiting penalties and turnovers will be essential in winning this Bowl game, while time management and field position can come into play.

If West Virginia can create turnovers and capitalize on it will greatly improve their chances.

HAVE FUN!

Although it sounds cliche, it makes a difference.

WVU has shown flashes this season of what the team is capable of when they play with energy.

Young players are getting their first chance to prove themselves and could play their hearts out in trying to win their University a Bowl.

West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene knows how to play flare and draw attention.

If West Virginia can show they play well when having “fun” against North Carolina on Wednesday, it could be a great indicator for next season and great for recruiting.
