JJ Wetherholt, West Virginia’s shortstop, was ranked as the #1 prospect for the 2024 MLB draft in MLB.com’s latest Top 100 by Jonathan Mayo.
Last season, Wetherholt hit .449 with 101 hits, 36 stolen bases and 16 homers. He won Big 12 Player of the Year and helped West Virginia to a Big 12 championship.
Wetherholt is expected to be scouted as a middle infielder, with the possibility of a switch to second in the pros. He has a .954 fielding percentage through two seasons with the Mountaineers.
The last time a player from WVU was selected in the first round of the MLB draft was Alek Manoah in 2019, being selected 11 overall by the Blue Jays.
