West Virginia lost the Backyard Brawl 80-63 on Wednesday night to Pitt. The numbers back up Pitt’s strong shooting night from beyond the arc compared to WVU’s struggles from long range.
Three-Point Shooting
The simple story was three-point shooting. Pit made 16 three’s, while West Virginia made only three. WVU went 3 for 20 from deep, while Pitt went 16 for 38 from beyond the arc.
Pitt’s 16 made three’s were the most WVU had given up in a game since 2020, and it’s the fifth time they’ve allowed that many three-pointers made in program history. Blake Hinson’s nine three-pointers tied the most made by a single player against WVU, with the last time it happened being 2018.
West Virginia’s 15 percent shooting from deep was the lowest mark in a game since Dec. 29, 2020, against Northeastern.
Turnovers
Turnovers were not a huge problem for the Mountaineers, as they only turned the ball over nine times. However, those nine turnovers led to 17 Pitt points. Conversely, Pitt turned the ball over only six times, leading to 10 points for the Mountaineers.
Bench Scoring
Bench scoring is an area that the Mountaineers obviously struggle with. Getting Akok Akok back helps a little bit with depth, but overall, the Mountaineers still don’t have much to turn to outside of their starting five.
Pitt had 25 points scored off their bench, while WVU had just three. Seth Wilson scored all three points for WVU.
Points Leaders
Blake Hinson stole the show with his 29 point performance. Two Mountaineers reached the 20-point mark as Quinn Slazinski scored 22 points and Jesse Edwards scored 20 points.
