West Virginia head coach Neal Brown talked to the media after a late 34-31 victory over Baylor in the regular season finale.
The Mountaineers were able to drive 80 yards with 1:14 left on the clock and no timeouts after a missed field goal attempt by Baylor’s Isaiah Hankins. WVU also had a similar drive before halftime.
Two-Minute Drill
“Garrett’s really good at the two-minute [drill]. We scored two touchdowns tonight with a minute or with less than a minute and a half, both times with zero timeouts,” Brown said.
West Virginia’s success with the two-minute drill was the clear bright spot in an up and down game which included the Mountaineers allowing back to back kickoff returns for touchdowns.
Zach Frazier Injury
However, on the Mountaineers final drive, star lineman Zach Frazier was injured and is feared to have played his last game for West Virginia.
“Let me tell you something, I can’t say enough about Zach Frazier,” Brown started. “So appreciative of him and his family and I think that one play sums up who he is for his entire career and I just hope our fanbase really understands that.”
The play in question may be remembered by Mountaineer fans for a long time.
“So he had an injury that’s significant, not something that’s going to be long-term, but he probably won’t play in the bowl game and he limps off because he knows that it’s a 10-second runoff if he stays down and I think that speaks to his intelligence, how tough he is and he’s a great player. I plan on doing this for a long time, I don’t know if I’ll ever coach a center that’s better,” Brown said.
Next up, bowling
After finishing the regular season with eight wins, WVU will now look to compete for a bowl win and will look even beyond, preparing for next season.
“First of all we want to win. Second of all, we want to make sure it’s an enjoyable experience for our guys because it’s a bonus. The next thing is we want to prepare for next year. We can do all those things but the goal is to get to nine (wins)” Brown said of the bowl game and the future.
