Mountaineers hold on for fourth win of the season over George Washington

West Virginia is now 4-0 after making stops in the final minutes of a 54-51 victory over the George Washington Revolutionaries.

After holding a tight lead throughout, the Revolutionaries took the lead with just under five minutes remaining, but not even 30 seconds later, JJ Quinerly tied the game with a layup. Jordan Harrison was then fouled and made a free throw to gain the lead that would hold for the game’s remainder.

Quinerly led WVU in the victory, standing as the only Mountaineer to score in double digits with 24 points on 10 of 20 shooting. She also led the team in rebounds with nine and steals with six.

Outside of Quinerly the team really struggled compared to their typical standards. Quinerly was the only Mountaineer to shoot 50% from the field or more, and the team’s shooting splits were 19/62 from the field, 2/18 from three, and 14 of 24 from the free throw line.

The 54-point performance was the least WVU has scored in a game by far this season, with their second lowest being a 71-62 win over Pittsburgh. Their team shooting splits were also the least by far in any game except for their 58.3% free throw shooting, which outdid their 12/23 performance against Loyola Maryland.

Due to West Virginia’s defensive performance, however, featuring 19 steals and 25 George Washington turnovers, the Mountaineers led by as much as 10 in the win. They also forced the Revolutionaries’ lowest scoring performance of the season, in which they now hold a 3-2 record.

Nevertheless, the offensive inefficiencies by the Mountaineers will be something to look at ahead of Friday’s game against Charlotte. It will be the second of three games played in the San Juan Shootout this weekend. George Washington will play Southern Illinois before swapping opponents with the Mountaineers on Saturday.
