Upsets benefiting West Virginia Men’s Soccer and their path to the Final Four

No. 5 West Virginia men’s soccer took down Louisville 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Now, what seemed to be a tough path to advance out of their quadrant of the bracket, has seemingly gotten a lot easier for the Mountaineers.

West Virginia plays host to Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Vermont upset No. 12 UCF, a conference for of the Mountaineers, 3-2 on Sunday.

Sunday would most likely have been WVU’s last home game of the season, as No. 4 Georgetown would have hosted the round of eight, but they were upset by James Madison 1-0, over the weekend. This means WVU is the highest remaining seed in their quadrant of the bracket.

Then, the final ranked team in the quadrant in No. 13 UCLA, they also fell in the second round to Loyola Marymount (CA), 1-0.

In the second round this past weekend, there were six national seeds who lost. Three of them happened to be in West Virginia’s quadrant. The road to the Final Four will now run through Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.

If West Virginia men’s soccer beats Vermont on Saturday, they will host the winner of JMU and LMU.

Kickoff on Saturday is set for 4:00 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN+.
