Neal Brown Quick Hits: Reflecting on blowout loss against Oklahoma, not representative of the season, looking toward Cincinnati

Neal Brown

West Virginia head coach Neal Brown spoke to the media following a grueling 59-20 defeat to Oklahoma.

“We didn’t coach good enough, we didn’t execute good enough and that didn’t resemble anything that the 2023 Mountaineers have been. And to say that I’m disappointed would be an understatement at the least. Quite frankly, I’m pissed and nearly embarrassed by what we put on the tape tonight,” Brown said.

The Mountaineers had clear defensive struggles allowing 644 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns.

“They spread us out and put us (West Virginia defense) in one on one situations,” Brown explained.

Brown noted that the Sooners completely won the battle upfront which ultimately led them to victory.

Even though it doesn’t entirely change the outcome, Brown thinks the game would’ve been more tightly contested had there been goal-line cameras.

“I thought we got in on first down on the goal line, thought we got in on second down, and that’s not a knock on officiating. But here we are, we’re playing a national TV game. We don’t have a goal-line camera, not one single goal-line shot, whether the ball got over or not, which is amazing to me. I don’t think we win the game, but it’s a hell of a lot more interesting,” Brown said.

Offensively, the lack of an efficient passing game led to West Virginia’s demise.

“Probably as bad as stats passing as I’ve ever been associated with. We had drops, we missed reads, we missed throws,” Brown said.

The Mountaineers were just four of 16 on third down and only completed 32% of passes.

WVU will look to bounce back next week against new Big 12 foe Cincinnati (3-7) at home.

“I can promise you we’ll finish a hell of a lot better than we look tonight because that ain’t been the team that we’ve been coaching all year,” Brown said.
