WVU Volleyball fell 3-2 Friday night in the second loss to Texas Tech.
The match began where it left off Thursday night. WVU’s 12 attack errors in 37 attacks accounted for nearly half of Texas Tech’s points in the 25-16 Red Raiders win.
Texas Tech opened with a four point run, which they emulated three more times in the set.
The Red Raiders had no such runs in the second set, however, as WVU improved their hitting percentage from -.108 to .231 in 39 attacks.
Sophomore outside hitter Bailey Miller had four kills in the set while freshman middle blocker Emma Beretich swung for three of her own. Despite this, the team’s variety of errors, including three missed serves, resulted in a 25-23 loss in the set.
The Mountaineers turned the match around in the third set with a 26-24 win capped off by a Bailey Miller kill. The Mountaineers had a 19-13 kill advantage in the set but triple Texas Tech’s two errors, keeping the set close throughout.
After falling 6-2 early, the Mountaineers regained a similar momentum for a fourth set win.
Texas Tech had their worst hitting performance of the match in the set, as they hit 13 kills and 10 errors in 50 sets. Junior outside hitter Hailey Green led the Mountaineers with four kills in the set.
After evening the match 2-2, though, West Virginia couldn’t quite finish the job, as they fell 15-12 in the final set. The Mountaineers led 12-10 before a run including three errors and an ace gave Texas Tech the win.
Green and Miller had much heavier usage in the match than on Thursday, as the hitters had 52 and 50 attacks respectively. Each finished with 18 kills in the match.
Lauren DeLo assisted her hitters 51 times in the match while grabbing a kill of her own. Fellow fifth year Camilla Covas led a strong back row performance for the Mountaineers with 21 digs in the long match.
The Mountaineers will take a break after falling to 2-13 in-conference. They will return to Texas for their next match on the 18th against Baylor.
