Live Game Thread: BYU vs West Virginia

West Virginia faces BYU on Saturday as the winner of the game officially becomes bowl eligible.

Halftime: West Virginia 27, BYU 0

Third Quarter

1:09 — West Virginia scores again on a Kole Taylor 43-yard touchdown catch. Taylor broke a tackle and dove to try to evade being tackled as WVU extends their lead.

WVU 37, BYU 0

8:34 — West Virginia’s defense forces BYU off the field on 4th and 7, as the Cougars are 0/3 on fourth down.

10:35 — Michael Hayes with his third field goal of the game from 23 yards.

14:50 — BYU returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown, but it was called back for a holding penalty.

Second Quarter

0:00 — Michael Hayes kicks a 22-yard field goal to send things into half. WVU had a 3rd and 14 and Greene found Devin Carter for a 38-yard gain. Greene found EJ Horton and Carter down in BYU territory before the Mountaineers took the points to end the half.

1:05 — Aubrey Burks jumps on a fumble from Parker Kingston, as WVU takes over at their own 18 with three timeouts remaining.

2:18 — West Virginia gets help from the referees again as they get two penalties on a late hit on Garrett Greene. WVU faced a 3rd and 9 from the 12, and Greene finds Preston Fox in a cluster of players in the back of the end zone. Jahiem White eclipsed 100 yards on the ground on that drive, as he had multiple rushes where he showed off his speed.

7:53 — BYU once again was moving the ball, but the Mountaineers had two huge TFL’s. Lee Kpogba broke through for the first one, and then Anthony Wilson had one for a third-down stop. WVU with the ball at their own 13, leading by 17.

10:47 — West Virginia had 2nd and 4, but had three penalties for 20 yards. WVU gets a gain of seven to get it into a better spot for the kick and Michael Hayes makes a 46-yard field goal as WVU extends their lead.

WVU 17, BYU 0

13:50 — Beanie Bishop with a really good read and then a hit on fourth down as WVU’s defense gets off the field on fourth down yet again. Mountaineers take over at their own 35.

End First: West Virginia 14, BYU 0

First Quarter

2:04 — West Virginia’s defense has gotten beat early on their first two possessions, but have settled in on third and fourth down. WVU’s offense had a big gain from Donaldson on the return drive, but would be forced to punt as Garrett Greene had a bad miss on second down.

6:17 — After getting a stop on fourth down near midfield, West Virginia takes advantage and does it in a hurry. The Mountaineers drive 52 yards on five plays and score a touchdown on a 1-yard rush from CJ Donaldson in 1:50. Traylon Ray had three catches for 42 yards on the drive.

WVU 14, BYU 0

9:59 — CJ Donaldson gets in the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown rush on a pitch left. Donaldson had two tough runs on that drive, on a fourth down and then pushed through on the pitch to score. He has now scored in seven straight games for the Mountaineers.

12:26 — West Virginia right guard Brandon Yates is down and Ja’Quay Hubbard is coming in for him.

Pregame Notes

Doug Nester is out for West Virginia, as expected, and that is the only real injury concern. With Nester being out, Nick Malone will get the start at right tackle. Hershey McLaurin is dressing for the Mountaineers after he missed last week’s game. CJ Donaldson will start at running back after he didn’t start last week. With
