West Virginia interim head coach Josh Eilert gave an update on the medical status of Akok Akok on Thursday, nearly one week after his on-court collapse in WVU’s exhibition game against George Mason.
“Our medical staff continues to monitor him daily,” said Eilert. “They’ve done additional testing earlier this week. I was a business major. None of this when they start talking medical terminology, it goes over my head. I’ll leave that up to them, but that’s certainly something we work with them everyday to figure out what the next step is.”
Akok was released from the hospital on Oct. 29, and has been recovering at his home in Morgantown since then.
“He seems to be in really good spirits and trying to figure out where to go from here.”
As for whether Akok will be suiting up for the Mountaineers again this season, Eilert has “no idea where that’s going to end.”
“I have no idea where that’s going to end. I know in the short term he will not be playing on Monday and that’s how I’m operating right now in the short term.”
In his absence, Eilert said Quinn Slazinski will be starting at the four position for the Mountaineers.
“At this point on paper, Quinn would be slotting in as the starting four-man,” Eilert said.
The Mountaineers open the regular season on Monday against Missouri State with tip off set for 7:00.
