Last-minute heroics propel No. 7 West Virginia to a 2-1 over Old Dominion on senior night

Senior forward Yutaro Tsukada drilled a penalty kick in the 90th minute to secure West Virginia men’s soccer a 2-1 over Old Dominion, cementing an unbeaten record at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in the regular season. 

Both teams started the match off slowly, trading shot attempts to begin the match. 

That was until 38th minute when junior defender Carlos Hernando kicked a goal to break the scoreless tie for his first goal on the season. Junior defender Max Broughton and senior midfielder Ryan Crooks both assisted on the goal. 

After being shut out the entire match, Old Dominion junior midfielder Karan Mandair scored off a penalty kick to tie the match 1-1 late in the 85th minute.

The match looked to be heading toward a tie until West Virginia was awarded a penalty kick at 90th minute mark. Tsukada blasted it to the top right corner of the goal to secure a 2-1 victory dramatically.

West Virginia ended the regular season with a 12-1-4 record overall, with a 6-0-3 record at home. 

West Virginia (3) will is projected to play next against Georgia State (6) in the Sun Belt Championship quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. in Orlando, Florida. The game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
