West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene is far north of where he grew up in Tallahassee, Florida.
Greene grew up as a kid of the Sunshine State, and this will be the first trip to Florida for the Mountaineers since 2018, and the first regular season game to Florida since 2011.
“I would say I’m fired up to play back home in Florida,” Greene said on Saturday.
Greene played his high school ball at Lawton Chiles High in Tallahassee, passing for 1,155 yards and seven touchdowns along with 930 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior. Greene did not receive much buzz from major Florida schools during his recruiting, but is excited for the opportunity to return to his home state this weekend.
Greene has ignited the West Virginia offense over the past two weeks, combining for 640 yards and four touchdowns passing, as well as 164 yards and two scores on the ground.
“I know he has a lot of friends and everything down in Florida,” offensive lineman Doug Nester said. “They come up here as much as they can but I’m sure he’s going to be super excited to get down there.”
Greene is one of many Floridians on WVU’s roster. Notable players such as Jared Bartlett, Aubrey Burks, CJ Donaldson, and Traylon Ray are all Florida natives.
Ray — who went to the same high school as Greene — took to social media to voice his excitement to return home saying, “home state this weekend,” in a post.
