Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy previews West Virginia

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy spoke with the media on Monday, giving his thoughts on West Virginia.

The Mountaineers are coming off a last-second loss to Houston on a Hail Mary Pass, while the Cowboys head into Saturday’s game with two consecutive wins against ranked opponents.

“Neal is a good guy and is somewhat battling back from what the perception may be at West Virginia football. They’re playing pretty good. I don’t know what their record is now but they could be whatever they are plus one more win real easy. He’s done a great job up there and they have good schemes,” Gundy said.

The Cowboys will be hitting the road and heading to Morgantown, a place they have had success. Oklahoma State is 4-2 all-time in Morgantown, while Gundy holds a 8-3 record against West Virginia.

“West Virginia is a ways away. It’s kind of in a different part of the world for us,” Gundy said. “Regardless, our guys have to understand and prepare to play. They have to have a feel for once they get on the field it’s 11 on 11. They have a good home crowd there, they get loud there.”

When Gundy breaks down WVU’s offense, the legs of quarterback Garrett Greene stand out to him.

“Offensively they’re very similar with what they’ve done,” Gundy said. “The quarterback runs way better than what people think he does. He’s not a burner. He’s more effective than you think and he runs better than you think and then he doesn’t get caught a lot of times.”

On defense, Jared Bartlett stood out to Gundy and his versatility to be able to blitz as well as move around in coverage.

“Defensively, they’re in an odd front and they play a walk-around guy,” Gundy said. “His number is 10, he walks around and does a lot of different things. They bring him quite a bit. They like to blitz him. Base coverages, not a lot of man, more of a zone team.”

Gundy takes Oklahoma State into Morgantown this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Milan Puskar Stadium.
