Big 12 plans to expand conference schedule for basketball for both men and women next season

Brett Yormark

This time next year, the conference shuffle will be over and the Big 12 will have 16 teams.

With the added number of teams going from 10 last season, to 14 this year, to 16 next year, there will be more conference games as well. Big 12 Comissioner Brett Yormark announced the decision to increase the Big 12 Men’s Basketball schedule to 20 games and the Big 12 Women’s Basketball schedule to 18 games.

“Scheduling and travel are a major priority for the conference,” Yormark said at the Big 12 Tipoff Event on Tuesday. “For basketball, it’s looking like a 20-game schedule and 18 for women is in our future, and on the football front we’re working diligently as well.”

The women will play two less games than the men due to their conference tournament taking place a week earlier than the men’s grouping.

Next year the Big 12 will lose Oklahoma and Texas, but gain the addition of four current Pac-12 schools in Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah.
