Game Thread: West Virginia vs Houston

West Virginia travels to Houston on Thursday night as the Mountaineers are looking for their fifth consecutive win, while Houston is looking for their first Big 12 win of the season.

Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen is the second-winningest coach in West Virginia history, with Neal Brown being his successor. The game is set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. ET, and it will be televised on FS1. This is the first ever meeting between the Mountaineers and Cougars.

Fourth Quarter

7:28 — Houston marches right down the field and goes 59 yards on six plays, capped off by a 21-yard touchdown from Smith to Sneed.

12:02 — Houston needed four plays to score and take the lead back again. The Cougars used a 8-yard connection from Smith to Sam Brown to complete a 2:06 touchdown drive. Beanie Bishop was in coverage and appeared to have an angle, but he jumped too early which gave Brown the opportunity to make the play.

14:!6 — Garrett Greene rushes for a 1-yard score as the Mountaineers retake the lead. WVU needed the score and they got it. Kole Taylor with a 13-yard catch and run to set WVU up inside the one.

End of Third Quarter: Houston 21, West Virginia 17

Third Quarter

5:15 — West Virginia looked to have a touchdown as Greene had a pass to Jaylen Anderson and it hit him in the numbers, which was then picked off out of the air as it was bobbled. Houston would then score a 16-yard touchdown from Smith to Joseph Manjack for the score.

HOU 21, WVU 17

11:09 — After the WVU offense scored a touchdown, WVU’s defense got a three and out, including two negative plays on the drive.

13:06 — West Virginia uses a trick play flea flicker to find Traylon Ray for a 35-yard touchdown from Greene. On consecutive plays WVU had a gain of 19 yards on third down and a gain of 35 on the touchdown. 4 plays, 56 yards, 1:47.

WVU 17, HOU 14

Second Quarter

0:28 — Houston gets the lead back on a 2-yard rush from Donovan Smith. Smith and the Cougars went 66 yards in 1:26 after West Virginia went three and out inside their own 10 yard line to get a short field.

End of First Quarter: West Virginia 10, Houston 7

First Quarter

0:13 — CJ Donaldson with a 5-yard touchdown rush as Garrett Greene threw a block in order to free Donaldson to the edge. 8 plays, 69 yards, 3:45. West Virginia retakes the lead.

WVU 10, HOU 7

4:03 — And just like that, Houston’s Matthew Golden returns the kickoff for 100 yards and the Cougars now lead.

HOU 7, WVU 3

4:16 — Both teams were able to move the ball down the field, except the Mountaineers were able to get inside the red zone, while the Cougars were forced to punt. West Virginia went 16 plays for 82 yards, including a 21-yard pass to Devin Carter on a third down.

Houston wins the toss and they elect to receive.
