TCU Head Coach Sonny Dykes met with the media this week and discussed the challenge of facing West Virginia this week on Saturday night.
He opened acknowledging West Virginia is a team that TCU has struggled with in recent years.
“We know it’s been a tough game for TCU in the past,” Dykes said. “This is a good football team, a team that has played with a lot of confidence, a lot of momentum. Had a really good win against Pittsburgh, then obviously a really good conference win against Texas Tech last week.”
He also mentioned how West Virginia is really good on the defensive side of the ball and doesn’t see any weaknesses from that unit.
“It’s kind of typical West Virginia defensive front, they’re good up front, they’re big and they’re strong, and they play hard and they’re very physical,” Dykes said. “I don’t see a weakness defensively. I think that’s the thing typically when you go into a week, and you start looking at teams and go, ‘we want to go after this guy or we’re going to attack that guy or they’re not good at this, can’t play this.’ You don’t really see much of that from West Virginia.”
“They’re just a really solid defensive football team. They tackle well, they run the ball, they understand how to leverage the ball, and finding the ball back to other people to make tackles, and so they just play a really good brand of defense.”
It is no secret that West Virginia is still unsure about who will be their quarterback this weekend and Dykes discussed how TCU is preparing for both options.
“I think you have to prepare for both,” Dykes said. “I’m not sure quite exactly what we’re going to see yet. I think their skill sets somewhat similar, it’s not like they’re completely totally different guys, obviously one’s left-handed, one’s right-handed, which makes things a little bit different.”
Kickoff for Saturday’s game at Amon G. Carter Stadium is set for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
