Goal in the final seconds lifts WVU to upset over No. 3 Portland

No. 16 West Virginia and No. 3 Portland battled for 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.

The difference would come with three seconds left in the game though, as Marcus Caldeira scored the lone goal of the match, lifting the Mountaineers to a 1-0 victory.

The goal would be Caldera’s sixth of the season through just five games, and has scored at least one goal in all of West Virginia’s games this season. The goal, also helps the Mountaineers stay undefeated to start the year.

Both teams had multiple chances, combining for 19 total shots on the afternoon.

West Virginia had nine shots, with four of them being on target. Yutaro Tsukada led the way with five of those shots, while Caldeira had two.

Portland had 10 shots, but only one of them were on gaol for West Virginia goalkeeper Jackson Lee. The Portland offense had combined to score 13 goals through their first three games. WVU has allowed just one goal over the first five games of the season.
