GAME THREAD: Duquesne vs West Virginia

West Virginia has their home opener against Duquesne on Saturday evening at Milan Puskar Stadium.

Follow along for game updates with kickoff set for 6:02 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.

Third Quarter

8:38 — Duquesne

10:03 — West Virginia

West Virginia was able to get all the way to the goal line, in large part due a 39-yard rush from Jahiem White. Rodne Gallagher had a chance at the end zone, diving for the pylon, losing control of the ball and leading to a touchback.

12:32 — Duquesne

On the first play of the game, the Dukes use a 24-yard scree play to get into WVU territory. The Mountaineer defense makes up for it on the next play with a sack. Behind the chains, Duquesne can’t connect on a third and 10, and then go for it on fourth and 10 but the WVU pass rush is too much with Tomi Durojaiye leading the rush multiple times.

15:00 — West Virginia

Backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol was inserted in the game at quarterback. Marchiol made a great third-down throw to Ja’Shaun Poke, which set up a fourth and one from the 40 yard line. The Mountaineers can’t convert, giving the ball back to Duquesne.

Second Quarter

0:39 — Duquesne

The Dukes don’t run any real offense and we are off to halftime. Halftime isn’t happening because of the earlier delay, therefore WVU is about to receive the kickoff which starts the third quarter.

2:50 — West Virginia

West Virginia started out slow on the drive, needing a fourth-down rush from CJ Donaldson to pick up the first down. Following that, Greene scrambled for an 18-yard gain, setting up WVU inside the Duquesne 35 yard line. WVU finished the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Greene to Preston Fox as the Mountaineers scored on three consecutive drives following the delay.

3:57 — Duquesne

Duquesne again goes three and out as the Mountaineers dialed up the pressure on third down leading to a sack from Jared Bartlett.

5:11 — West Virginia

The Mountaineers used a familiar face in Hudson Clement for a 46-yard touchdown pass. Clement has five catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns.

WVU 28, DUQ 10

6:49 — Duquesne

The Dukes go three and out and are forced to punt as the WVU rush is able to cause havoc.

8:14 — West Virginia

Hudson Clement with a big reception on a 70-yard pass from Garrett Greene. Clement has three passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

WVU 21, DUQ 10

Weather Update: If there are no more strikes in the current 30-minute window, the teams will come back on the field at 8:52 and the game will restart at 9:07 There has also been a decision made to forgo halftime

Duquesne — 11:38

The Dukes get stopped by WVU on the first lay, but then connect on a third down conversion for 34 yards as another Duke receiver had no one able to touch him. A costly offensive pass interference penalty which would’ve resulted in a touchdown for Duquesne backs them up to the 20 yard line. They end up making a 39-yard field goal. Following the field goal the game was put into a weather delay.

WVU 14, DUQ 10

West Virginia — 13:00

The Mountaineers had multiple chances to move the ball down the feild. Greene attempted a pass to Jeremiah Aaron in the end zone which he couldn’t haul in, and then on fourth down, Greene had an open receiver in Aaron, but it was a low throw.

Duquesne — 14:40

The Dukes go three and out and WVU takes over in good field position.

WVU opens the second quarter finishing their drive with a 8-yard score from Jaylen Anderson. The Mountaineers used Kole Taylor in bunches on that drive, before Anderson finished things off.

WVU 14, DUQ 7

First Quarter

Duquesne — 5:49

The Dukes pick up two third downs, both finding open receivers for easy catches. The Mountaineers get their first interception of the season as Beanie Bishop wins in one-on-one coverage and gets the pick.

West Virginia — 9:11

The Mountaineers get on the board on a 14-yard pass from Garrett Greene to Hudson Clement. The Mountaineers ran the ball effectively there, and also had sightings of Rodney Gallagher and Jahiem White on the drive.

Duquesne — 10:40

The Dukes start their drive inside their own 10, and they went nowhere as they go three and out.

West Virginia — 12:01

The Mountaineers have a chance at picking up a first down, but Cortez Braham drops a third down pass from Garrett Greene and WVU is forced to punt. On the punt, Oliver Straw is hurt and was down on the field briefly before he exited with trainers.

Duquesne — 15:00

The Dukes go three and out, but had a chance on third down. They missed high on the throw and were forced to punt. On the punt, the ball bounced around the 50 yard line, but WVU’s Jacolby Spells touched the ball leading to the Dukes recovering the ball on the WVU 46 yard line.

Duquesne takes full advantage of the special teams miscue connecting on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Darryl Powell.
