The West Virginia Volleyball team won the second of their three matches at the Colgate Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament on Friday evening against Cornell 3-1.
The win gave head coach Reed Sunahara his 100th win at West Virginia.
West Virginia took the first two sets of the match 25-15 and 25-23. Cornell took the third set 25-23, then West Virginia held off the Cornell rally by winning the fourth set 25-19.
The Mountaineers had a chance to sweep the match leading 15-10 in the third set but could not hold off a rally from Big Red. Fortunately, West Virginia pulled away at the end of the fourth to seal the deal.
West Virginia had 55 kills compared to Cornell’s 35, 54 digs compared to Cornell’s 42, and had a .211 hitting percentage compared to Cornell’s .089.
West Virginia was led in kills by outside hitter Hailey Green with 17, in digs by libero Camilla Covas and libero/defensive specialist Danilyn Neil with 12 apiece, and in blocks by middle blocker Tierney Jackson with eight.
Cornell was led in kills by outside hitter Eliza Konvicka with 12, in digs by libero Sarita with 13, and in blocks by middle blocker Sydney Moore with nine.
West Virginia improves to 3-5 on the season and will take on Albany for their third match of the tournament on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., an hour and a half before West Virginia Football’s kickoff. Cornell takes on the same Albany team a couple of hours earlier in the day at 11 a.m.
