The West Virginia Volleyball team closed out the Duke/North Carolina Tournament this weekend with a nail-biting 3-2 loss to Duke on Saturday.
Duke took the first set 25-18, then West Virginia took the next two sets 25-23 each. Duke won the fourth set 25-23, then they rallied in the fifth set to win 18-16.
West Virginia led by as much as 10-3 and 14-10 and a chance to win the match but they could not hold off the comeback by Duke and finished the tournament with an 0-3 mark.
West Virginia had 62 kills compared to Duke’s 53, and Duke had 59 digs compared to West Virginia’s 56. Duke had a better hitting percentage at .237 compared to West Virginia’s .199.
West Virginia was led in kills by outside hitter Hailey Green with 20, in digs by setter Lauren DeLo and outside hitter Bailey Miller with 14 apiece, and in blocks by right side/defensive specialist Emma Winter with four. Duke was led in kills by middle blocker Jess Robinson with 21, in digs by defensive specialist/libero Madison Bryant with 21 digs, and in blocks by middle blockers Lizzie Fleming and Jess Robinson with 6 apiece.
West Virginia drops to 2-4 on the season and will be back in action again when they make a trip to the Colgate Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament next weekend starting on Thursday, September 7 against Colgate at 7 p.m. Duke improves to 3-2 and will be back in action next weekend in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge starting with Michigan State on Friday, September 8.
