The West Virginia men’s soccer team opened up their season tonight against California Baptist University.
West Virginia started out controlling the game and had their opportunities at goals but were struggling to stay onside.
In the 14th minute, Ryan Baer played a through ball to Marcus Caldeira who needed just one cut to get around the goalie and put the ball in the back of the net to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
Throughout the rest of the first half, West Virginia found themselves in control of this game, allowing just two shots on target for California Baptist and carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The story was the same for the start of the second half with West Virginia having their opportunities to score but struggling to find themselves in an onside position.
In the 55th minute, Yutaro Tsukada played a ball across the front of the goal that found a running Sergio Ors Navarro who only took one touch to score another goal for the Mountaineers and increase the lead to 2-0.
West Virginia continued to control the second half, adding another goal in the 88th minute after an Otto Ollikainen cross found the head of Marcus Caldeira who increased the lead to 3-0 which proved to be the final score.
The Mountaineers next game is Monday as they will play host to Bucknell with kickoff set for 7:00.
