Mazzulla speaks to WVU football team as season draws near

On Tuesday, Boston Celtics’ head coach and former West Virginia basketball guard Joe Mazzulla stopped by Milan Puskar Stadium to speak with the WVU football team ahead of the 2023 season.

In a video, Mazzulla said, “this emblem has become a huge factor in my life. It’s become an identity of who I am,” as he pointed to the WVU logo on his shirt.

Mazzulla is not the first personality to speak to West Virginia’s team, as Head coach Neal Brown has brought in the likes of Mazzulla, country singer Charles Wesley Godwin, and WVU Sports Hall of Famers Don Nehlen and Darryl Talley to motivate the 2023 Mountaineers during the offseason.

Mazzulla, who played for the Mountaineers from 2007-2011, led the Celtics to a 57-25 record and the No. 2 seed in the NBA Playoffs in his first season at the helm. In the postseason, Mazzulla and company got past the Atlanta Hawks in six games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals before falling to the Miami Heat in seven games.

Mazzulla spoke to the team about the weight the “Flying WV” holds in his life and around the country.

“This emblem (the “Flying WV”) has become a huge factor in my life,” Mazzulla said. “It’s become an identity of who I am.”
