Ahead of the 2023 season, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team has been picked to finish fourth out of fourteen teams in the Big 12 Conference. BYU, TCU, and Texas have been picked to finish ahead of the Mountaineers, and are the only three teams in the conference to receive first place votes.
In 2022, the Mountaineers captured their fifth Big 12 championship with a 1-0 (2 OT) win over the TCU Horned Frogs. Head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown’s group used that momentum to win an NCAA Tournament game at home against Virginia Tech, but could not overcome the No. 21 Penn State Nittany Lions in the second round.
The Mountaineers return their top goal scorer in senior AJ Rodriguez, who found the back of the net five times last fall. West Virginia also returns the top assist-getter on the 2022 team in junior Dilary Heredia-Beltran, who recorded seven assists and two goals last year.
