Following yesterday’s practice, head coach Neal Brown took the time to speak with the media, and one of the topics was redshirt freshman quarterback Nicco Marchiol.
“Yesterday about halfway through practice was probably as poor decision making as he’s made,” said Brown. “He was able to correct it which I think is a sign of mental toughness and he went a stretch there where he made some bad decisions and then four out of his next six plays were explosive plays.”
Brown said he was really encouraged seeing Marchiol get chewed out for his decisions and be able to bounce back.
“We got to clean up some of those decisions, but encouraged with how he handled adversity because as coaches you try to create that,” Brown said.
Marchiol is battling with Garrett Greene for the starting quarterback job, and Brown said he was pleased with how Greene ran the ball and how he finished a drive in the red zone.
Brown said there is still no timetable on the decision of who will get the starting role.
“When we’re going to name a starter, I don’t really have an answer for you,” Brown said. “I know you all don’t like that, but I don’t really have an answer for that.”
