The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is ongoing out in Australia/New Zealand and West Virginia Women’s Soccer has a few players playing in it.
Incoming freshman forward Bella Flanigan is competing with the Philippines team. They finished 1-0-2 and in the group stage.
Flanigan appeared in all three of their games and finished with two clearances, two interceptions, and one foul committed.
A pair of WVU Soccer alumni who played from 2013-16, Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence, are competing for the Canada team. This is their third appearance each in the Women’s World Cup.
On Monday, Canada was eliminated in the group stage, losing to Australia 4-0 to finish the World Cup at 1-1-1.
Buchanan appeared in all three games and had 17 clearances, 15 interceptions, one chance created, and 13 completed dribbles.
Lawrence also appeared in all three games while recording six clearances, eight interceptions, four chances created, and 19 dribbles completed.
The Women’s World Cup is currently in the group stage and the knockout stage will begin on Saturday Aug. 5.
