West Virginia cross country and track and field athlete Ceili McCabe and baseball athlete JJ Wetherholt are the two candidates for the 2022-2023 Big 12 Athlete of the Year.
McCabe, a redshirt-sophomore from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, was the 2022 Big 12 Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year and a member of the All-Big 12 First team. McCabe was also named the Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year. This was her second year in a row winning the previously mentioned awards.
Wetherholt, a sophomore from Mars, Pennsylvania, was tabbed as one of the best players in the country this year. Wetherholt led all of Division 1 in batting average, finishing the year with a .449 average. Wetherholt helped guide West Virginia to its first Big 12 regular season title in program history. Wetherholt, a unanimous First Team All-American, was also the Big 12 Player of the Year.
The awards this year were won by TCU’s Max Duggan and Texas’ Julien Alfred.
