Stevenson talks Huggins following game-winning shot

As Erik Stevenson lifted Best Virginia over Dubois Dream on Tuesday with a game-winning three-pointer, he pointed to his former head coach.

Bob Huggins was in attendance as West Virginia alumni’s basketball game on Tuesday, showing his support for many of his former players. Huggins resigned last month following his arrest for driving under the influence in Pittsburgh, but Stevenson said that is not going to shape his view of the coach.

“People can say what they want but that’s my guy. I love him to death,” Stevenson said after the game. “He changed my life and it was great to see him up there. That’s my dude, period.”

Best Virginia’s roster features eight former Mountaineers who played under Huggins on the roster as well as head coach James Long being a former player.

Stevenson would get it done on the defensive end of the floor as well as on offense late in the game. With the first team to score 70 points to win being named the winner, Best Virginia trailed 68-67. They had trouble out of a timeout and could not convert, giving the Dream a chance to win.

Stevenson along with Kevin Jones were able to help on a drive to the rim, with Stevenson grabbing the crucial rebound to return possession to Best Virginia. Jones would feed Stevenson who hit the game-winning shot, before pointing to his former coach who sat just a few rows up in the stands.
