West Virginia has a tough road ahead.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Mountaineers’ 2023 slate is the third-hardest schedule in the country. West Virginia ranks behind Michigan State and South Carolina, and there are four total Big 12 teams in the top ten.
West Virginia has 11 of their 12 opponents be power five opponents for the fifth time in the past five full seasons. This means two of WVU’s three non-conference openings are against power five schools — this year it being Penn State and Pitt.
In 2018 WVU played Tennessee and was slated to play NC State before the game was cancelled due to a hurricane. In 2019, WVU played Missouri and NC State. In 2020, there was not a full schedule played. In 2021, WVU played Virginia Tech and Maryland. Last season WVU played Pitt and Virginia Tech.
West Virginia faces Penn State in week one on Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. on NBC. West Virginia hosts Pitt week three on Sept. 16 at Milan Puskar Stadium.
