Neal Brown will be calling plays on offense, he announced at Big 12 Media Days.
Brown, who is entering a pivotal year in his tenure at West Virginia is going to be calling the plays on offense as the Mountaineers are on their third offensive coordinator in as many years.
“The decision goes back to, we’re in a year where we need to have success,” Brown told Heather Dinich about taking over playcalling. “Really in a pivotal year, you fall back to your strengths.”
West Virginia’s offense will have a new look to it in 2023. Their strength is up front on their offensive line, and they will have a dual threat quarterback whether that be Garrett Greene or Nicco Marchiol. They also have a stable of capable and talented running backs led by sophomore CJ Donaldson.
“I think running the football is going to be the strength of our offensive team, but one emphasis on that is we have to be more explosive in our pass game,” Brown said on Thursday. “One emphasis on that is we have to be more explosive in our pass game.”
Brown said he wants the offense to be faster paced, with the ability to slow it down depending on the opponent they are playing that day. West Virginia ranked 33rd in the country in time of possession, but finished 57th in total offense last season.
“As far as tempo, we want to be able to present ourselves as playing fast all the time and then let the game dictate the tempo,” Brown said. “We’re going to have the ability to go as fast as anybody in the country but also the game and the style of game we need to play that day will dictate how fast we play.”
