Despite how the last two months went for the Hall of Fame head coach, West Virginia still plans to honor Bob Huggins.
Director of Athletics Wren Baker spoke on Monday as Huggins’ interim replacement — Josh Eilert — was hired and gave his perspective on what the future looks like between the university and Huggins.
“From an institutional perspective, he’s an important part of our history and we’re going to honor and recognize that in an appropriate way as we move forward,” Baker said. The last couple of months I know is not what he wanted to happen, certainly isn’t something that we wanted to happen.
“But, it is what it is and time has a way of healing all wounds. I think as time goes along there will be more and more focus on all the positive things that happened here during his time and certainly what’s happened the last few weeks will not impact my relationship with him and I don’t think it will have much of an impact on the university’s relationship with him.”
Eilert shared a similar sentiment saying he knows there will be a time to honor what Huggins brought to West Virginia.
“He’s getting some time to reflect and do some things. I know he has an extreme amount of remorse for what happened in the last month and he owns those mistakes and we’re going to move on,” Eilert said. “Like [Baker] said, time heals all wounds and there’ll be time we really take his legacy and his 16 years here and we really celebrate that.”
