On Saturday afternoon, West Virginia promoted Josh Eilert to be the interim head coach for West Virginia for the 2023-2024 season.
Eilert — who had been a longtime assistant under former head coach Bob Huggins — was a popular choice from players to be named the next head coach following Huggins’ resignation last weekend.
West Virginia has felt the hurt of the 30-day window players can utilize to transfer following the departure of Huggins, with Kerr Kriisa, Tre Mitchell, and Joe Toussaint all entering the portal over the past two days.
Mitchell took a visit to Kentucky on Saturday, while Kriisa and Toussaint gave updates on their portal status after the news of Eliert’s hiring broke.
According to Jon Rothstein, with Eilert being named the next head coach, Toussaint is “still considering a return to Morgantown next season while also considering other schools.”
Toussaint thrived in a bench role this past season for WVU, averaging 9.4 points per game for the Mountaineers. Toussaint has also heard from multiple schools and has a visit to Kansas State lined up.
Kriisa — another WVU point guard — also entered the portal on Friday after committing to WVU from the transfer portal this offseason. Kriisa told Jeff Goodman that he was “really happy” WVU chose Eilert, but that he will take some time to think about everything that has transpired over the past week.
