As West Virginia’s coaching search rolls on, so do the candidates they are interviewing.
According to Adam Zagoria, West Virginia is talking to Jarrod Calhoun, Ron Hunter, and Ritchie McKay, as well as Andy Kennedy — who it was previously reported that West Virginia was talking to.
Out of the remaining three, Calhoun is the only one with a West Virginia connection. Calhoun was a student assistant at Cincinnati under Huggins, and then was an assistant again under Huggins at West Virginia. Calhoun is the current head coach at Youngstown State, where he has gone 96-96 in six seasons. This past year he led the Penguins to a 24-10 record and a Horizon League regular season title.
Hunter is the current head coach at Tulane and has been a head coach for 29 seasons. He started off at IUPUI, and helped lead them from NAIA to a Division I program. He then went to Georgia State, before becoming the head coach at Tulane over the past four seasons. In his career, Hunter has a 448 games at the DI level, and is 56-57 at Tulane, but went 20-11 this past year.
McKay is another experienced head coach, having spent the last eight seasons as the head coach at Liberty. During those eight years, Liberty is 187-85 with two NCAA Tournament appearances, five regular season conference titles, and three conference tournament championships. McKay was the associate head coach at Virginia under Tony Bennett. In February, McKay signed a contract extension through the 2029-2030 season with Liberty.
