West Virginia head men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins was arrested on Friday evening with DUI charges.
According to an arrest report on Pittsburgh’s Public Safety Banner, around 8:30 p.m. last night, there was a man arrested for impaired driving in Allegheny West.
The report summary reads, Huggins was the identified driver of a vehicle who was over on the side of the road with a flat and shredded tire. Police tried to help him get the car off the road, and then suspected him to be driving under the influence. The report then reads they asked him to perform field sobriety tests and he failed, prompting police to take him into custody.
Huggins was identified at the end of the report saying, “Robert Huggins, 69 , of Morgantown, West Virginia was charged with Driving Under the Influence. He was released from custody and will appear for a preliminary hearing at a later date.”
The incident occurred in Zone 1, on Merchant Street off of Ridge Avenue, and he was blocking traffic. This is on the north side of Pittsburgh.
This offseason has been a tumultuous one for the West Virginia head men’s basketball coach, as Huggins had previously said homophobic remarks prompting a suspension and heavy fine. This is also not Huggins’ first DUI incident, with him having faced a DUI charge while at the University of Cincinnati in June of 2004.
Huggins — a Hall of Famer — had built one of the best transfer portal classes in the country this offseason, after bringing West Virginia back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021 a season ago. Huggins is also the active Division I leader in wins with 935.
