Since Thursday, West Virginia baseball knew they were probably not going to be a host school. However, the Mountaineers will secure an at-large bid to the 2023 NCAA Tournament, returning to the tournament for the first time since 2019.
West Virginia has stayed as a two-seed in a regional, but now it is just a matter of where they are going. Geographically speaking, the closest regionals for the Mountaineers are Virginia and Kentucky, after the 16 host schools were announced on Sunday night.
West Virginia is projected to go to the Charlottesville Regional (Virginia) by D1Baseball, and play Iowa who lost in the Big Ten Championship to Maryland on Sunday. West Virginia would be the two-seed, Iowa would be the three-seed, and then Virginia would face George Mason in the first round of the double-elimination regional on Friday.
Baseball America also has West Virginia as a two-seed and they have the Mountaineers traveling to Lexington to be the two-seed in Kentucky’s region. West Virginia would be slated to play Xavier — a team WVU took two of three from — on Friday and then Kentucky would play Ball State.
The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will be at noon on Monday on ESPN2.
