After being on the wrong end of a three-game sweep against Texas, West Virginia baseball knew they were going to suffer in the upcoming top-25 polls. Monday revealed that, with the Mountaineers falling multiple spots in both Baseball America’s and D1Baseball’s weekly polls.
Last week, the Mountaineers were ranked No. 6 in the nation by D1Baseball and were considered a Super Regional host. Now, if the top-25 were the final top-16 rankings, the Mountaineers would not even be hosting a regional in Morgantown.
West Virginia checked in at No. 21 this week by D1Baseball, one spot behind Texas and three spots behind other co-champion Oklahoma State. Baseball America was a lot nicer to the Mountaineers, dropping them seven spots to No. 14 in the country. They have Texas ranked No. 13, and Oklahoma State ranked No. 12.
The only thing that can help right the ship for West Virginia in terms of rankings and possibility at hosting is making a deep run in the Big 12 Tournament, showing this past weekend was nothing but a bump in the road.
