Latest NCAA Tournament projections has West Virginia on the outside looking in of hosting a regional

Suffering there consecutive losses for the first time in the last two seasons could not have come at a worse time if you are West Virginia baseball. When the pressure was turned up and the Mountaineers were under the microscope, they lost three straight to Texas and are paying the price for that this week.

The Mountaineers dropped from No. 6 in D1Baseball’s top-25 poll, to No. 21. Now, in D1Baseball’s latest NCAA Tournament projections, West Virginia finds themselves dropping from super regional host candidate to not even hosting a regional round.

The Mountaineers are now projected to be a two-seed in the Charlottesville Regional (Virginia).

West Virginia would play Iowa in the first round and the winner would play the winner of Virginia/Pennsylvania.

There are two Big 12 teams set as hosts with Oklahoma State being the No. 13 overall seed and Texas being slated as the final host team at No. 16.

West Virginia needs to make some noise in the Big 12 Tournament to improve their RPI, therefore improving their chances at hosting a regional. The Mountaineers are No. 24 by RPI, dropping six spots from where they were before the weekend. Texas is No. 23 and Oklahoma State is No. 20 in RPI.

West Virginia will play Texas Tech (44th RPI) and the winner of that game will play the winner of Oklahoma State/Oklahoma (36th RPI).
