There are two games left in the Big 12 baseball regular season and West Virginia is still in the driver’s seat despite a 12-2 thumping by Texas on Thursday.
The Mountaineers hold a one-game lead over Oklahoma State, and a two-game lead over Texas and Kansas State. On Thursday, Oklahoma State won their game against Oklahoma 13-2, while Kansas State used a walk-off 7-6 win to beat TCU.
Scenario 1 — West Virginia wins title
This scenario is still the most simple. All that has to happen is West Virginia has to win one game and they are the No. 1 overall seed in the Big 12 Tournament due to a head-to-head series victory over the Cowboys. With just one Oklahoma State loss and a West Virginia win, the Mountaineers would hold the title outright from the Cowboys.
Scenario 2 — WVU/OSU Tie
If Oklahoma State sweeps Oklahoma and WVU only wins one game, then we have a two-way share of the Big 12 title. However, for Big 12 Tournament seeding purposes, the Mountaineers would be the No. 1 seed in Arlington next week.
Scenario 3 — Texas/OSU/WVU Tie
Texas can still win the Big 12, they just can’t lose the next two games. Texas must sweep the Mountaineers, and then they would need Oklahoma State to lose at least one of the next two games to Oklahoma. This would also mean Kansas State loses one of their next two to TCU. If this were to happen, WVU, Oklahoma State, and Texas, would finish 15-9 and clinch a share of the title.
Scenario 4 — Oklahoma State wins title
If Oklahoma State sweeps Oklahoma and Texas sweeps West Virginia, Oklahoma State will be Big 12 regular season champions.
Scenario 5 — Texas/WVU win title
If Oklahoma State loses the next two games, Kansas State loses one of the next two to TCU and Texas wins the next two games, they share the Big 12 regular season title with WVU. However, because they swept WVU, Texas would be the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 Tournament.
Scenario 6 — Four-Way Tie
If West Virginia loses out and Texas and Kansas State win out, while Oklahoma State splits the last two games, there is then a four-way tie between WVU, Texas, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State for the Big 12 title, with all four schools finishing at 15-9.
All in all, if West Virginia wins tonight or on Saturday, they knock out Texas and Kansas State from contention. If Oklahoma State loses one more game, and WVU wins, then it is West Virginia’s title. The only way West Virginia does not clinch at least a share of the title is if Oklahoma State sweeps Oklahoma and WVU gets swept by Texas.
