Last year Notre Dame knocked off No. 1 overall seed Tennessee in the Super Regional to advance to Omaha for the College World Series. This year, both Tennessee and Notre Dame could be on their way to Morgantown for a regional according to D1Baseball’s latest projections.
West Virginia baseball is one win away from clinching a Big 12 regular season title and they have basically guaranteed themselves as a regional host. The only question now is if the Mountaineers’ historic season will result in them being a top-eight seed, meaning they would host a regional if they were to win out of their four-team bracket.
In D1Baseball’s weekly postseason projections, the Mountaineers are on the good side of the top eight. West Virginia is the No. 6 overall seed and would host the Morgantown Regional. In this would include No. 2 Tennessee, No. 3 Notre Dame, and No. 4 Rider.
Currently, Tennessee is 36-17 overall and is 14-13 in SEC play. Tennessee began the year as the No. 2 team in the country, but stumbled during parts of their conference schedule. Notre Dame is 29-20 overall and features a sweep over No. 21 Virginia on their resume.
In the meantime, the Mountaineers will look to finish what they started this weekend when they travel to Texas. One win is all WVU needs, but a sweep by the Longhorns would give them the Big 12 crown.
