JJ Wetherholt leads the nation in batting average as he looks to continue to make history

West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt has taken the top spot in the hunt for the Division I baseball batting title.

Wetherholt went 4-for-11 over the weekend, giving him a .463 average on the season which has him at the top spot, just edging out LSU’s Dylan Crews who has an average of .462 and is the consensus No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.

With just seven games left in the regular season, Wetherholt could make history alongside Crews as they could be the first Power 5 players to finish the season with above a .450 average since Buster Posey finished with a .463 average in 2008.

Wetherholt could also become the first Mountaineer to finish with above a .400 average since the trio of Dan DiBartolomeo (.439), Jedd Gyorko (.421) and Vince Belnome (.418) all reached that mark in the 2009 season.

Wetherholt currently is also chasing becoming Big 12 Player of the Year. Right now Wetherholt leads the Big 12 in batting average, slugging, on base percentage, on base + slugging, runs scored, hits and stolen bases. Wetherholt is sixth in the conference in home runs, second in doubles, and third in RBI.

The Mountaineers next game is Wednesday at Pitt.
