West Virginia second baseman JJ Wetherholt made his full return to the lineup this week. The sophomore started his first game in over a week on Wednesday and made a grand entrance as he hit a grand slam, as well as a triple and a sac-fly. Then, this weekend in WVU’s sweep over Baylor, Wetherholt hit two more home runs and has hit safely in nine consecutive games. This earned Wetherholt to be named Big 12 Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Blaine Traxel was in need of a quality start and he got just that on Saturday afternoon. In WVU’s 10-0 win over Baylor, Traxel pitched a complete game shutout and allowed six hits, while striking out six Bears hitters. Traxel was named Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week as well as Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. Traxel leads the country with five complete games this season, and that is the most by a Big 12 pitcher since 2014.
West Virginia is back in action tomorrow night at home against Pitt and then they host Oklahoma this weekend.
