Following a three-game sweep of Baylor over the weekend, West Virginia baseball returns home to begin the final three weeks of the regular season. They will be returning home on the cusp of being ranked inside the top 10, and will be playing against their rival Pitt.
With that is the hope that the Mountaineers can break their single-game attendance record in the Backyard Brawl on Wednesday.
The record for a crowd at Monongalia County Ballpark to see a West Virginia game is from their first game in the 2019 regional they hosted. The Mountaineers drew 4,355 to the ballpark that night.
This effort — which started on social media — has drawn the attention of Director of Athletics Wren Baker. Baker responded to a tweet which agrees with trying to ‘PacktheMon’.
West Virginia head coach Randy Mazey has loved the atmosphere Mountaineer fans have brought all season long. The Mountaineers had their sixth-largest crowd for last week’s game against Penn State, with 3,475 spectators.
Mazey’s wide Amanda took to Twitter herself to support the effort to set the attendance record on Wednesday night. She tweeted, “we will not take cold weather as an excuse,” with the temperatures in Morgantown expected to reach no higher than 46 degrees, with the threat of rain as well.
No. 12 West Virginia will look to keep up their winning ways against the Panthers on Wednesday. WVU previously beat Pitt 9-4 on Apr. 19, which was the start to their current eight-game win streak.
