West Virginia baseball ranked after a 4-0 week

West Virginia baseball completed a win against Pitt on the road and then a three-game sweep of TCU this week. Their success is starting to be seen by others, as they checked in ranked in both Baseball America’s and D1Baseball’s top 25 rankings.

The Mountaineers were without JJ Wetherholt for three of their four games this week and still got the job done. West Virginia is in first place in the Big 12 and is now entering the conversation to possibly host a regional.

Perfect Game also ranked the Mountaineers at No. 23 in their rankings.

D1Baseball ranked West Virginia at No. 18, while the Mountaineers were ranked No. 17 in the country by Baseball America. The only team ahead of the Mountaineers from the Big 12 in both polls is Texas Tech. The Mountaineers and Red Raiders face off in Morgantown May 12-May 14.

“We’re going to go into every game like we’re the underdog,” West Virginia head coach Randy Mazey said after his team’s 7-4 win on Saturday. “You got to keep reminding people that nationally our program hasn’t gotten a ton of respect. We’re always picked seventh or eighth in the preseason poll no matter how good we think we are. Nationally we’re always fighting for that respect so that serves to put a chip on our shoulder.”

West Virginia faces Penn State at home on Tuesday before facing Baylor on the road for a three-game series this weekend.
