West Virginia has baseball, Iowa State does not. Iowa State has softball, West Virginia does not. What started on social media, turned into a bond between the two teams in Stillwater over the weekend.
Back on March 20, Iowa State’s Lea Nelson took to Twitter voicing her displeasure over a popular fan account @ISUBarstool saying they won’t be able to talk about sports wise. Nelson — a member of the Iowa State softball team — took it personally, with softball still having the majority of their season left to play.
That’s when @WVUBarstool on Twitter adopted Nelson and the Cyclones.
“Since we don’t have a softball team, we have decided to be your biggest supporter,” they said in a tweet.
Then this weekend, it turned out something that started on social media can be used for some sense of good. The Cyclones and Mountaineers both found themselves in Stillwater, Oklahoma, playing Oklahoma State over the weekend in their respective sports.
On Saturday, Iowa State attended West Virginia’s baseball game, with the Mountaineers wining 9-5 and securing the series victory.
“Shoutout to the Iowa State [softball] team. Thanks for coming and cheering on the Mountaineers tonight in Stillwater. You had our guys fired up to win! Good luck tomorrow,” West Virginia head baseball coach Randy Mazey said in a tweet on Saturday.
Then on Sunday, Iowa State was able to partake in the winning ways, beating No. 3 Oklahoma State 3-2 in extra innings. They followed their victory in a very West Virginia way, singing Country Roads on their team bus.
