Dawn Plitzuweit leaving for head coaching position at Minnesota

It is one and done for the West Virginia women’s basketball head coach.

Chantel Jennings of The Athletic first reported Saturday morning, WVU’s first-year head coach is leaving the Mountaineers to take on the same position at Minnesota.

In her first season at WVU, Plitzuweit helped the Mountaineers finish 19-12 and return to the NCAA Tournament for the second time since 2016-2017. Plitzuweit came to West Virginia from South Dakota, where she took her team to a Sweet Sixteen a season ago.

Jennings says, Plitzuweit will be introduced on Monday and that the Gophers have “zeroed in” on her over the past few days.

The University of Minnesota then confirmed the news, releasing a statement about the addition of Plitzuweit.

“I am excited to welcome Dawn, her husband Jay and their family to Minnesota,” said University of Minnesota Director of Athletics Mark Coyle said. “Dawn is a process-driven coach and has coached winning teams at every step of her career. She has recruited Minnesota and has consistently produced teams that compete for championships. Dawn has Big Ten coaching experience and knows how competitive and strong the conference is. I know she is excited to get back to the area and build her program.”

West Virginia will now be searching for their second head women’s basketball coach in as many seasons.
