A look at WVU’s region in the NCAA Tournament

Arizona: Arizona finished their season on a three game losing streak after beating No. 21 Colorado and No. 4 Utah in back to back games. This is who WVU will meet in the first round, coming off of a loss of their own in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament. WVU finished with a 19-11 record, while Arizona finished with a 21-9 record. 

Maryland: The Terps come in as the No.2 in the region and the hosts of the region. Maryland lost to Iowa in the semi-finals of the Big 10 Tournament after winning seven games in a row and will face No. 15 Holy Cross in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Holy Cross: Holy Cross will face Maryland in the first round of the tournament as the No. 15 seed after winning their conference tournament. Holy Cross has won their last six games and has gone 24-8 this season.

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish come in as the No. 3 seed in the seed after going 25-5 this season, but losing in the second round of the ACC Tournament to Louisville. 

Southern Utah: Southern Utah is making their first NCAA Tournament appearance this season facing the Fighting Irish as the No. 14 seed after winning their conference tournament. The Thunderbirds went 23-9 this season and 16-2 in conference. 

Creighton: Creighton finished with a 22-8 record, but a second round exit in the Big East Tournament to Villanova and will face the winner of Illinois and Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as the No. 6 seed in the region. 

UCLA: The Bruins come in as the No. 4 seed in the region, losing in the final of the Pac-12 Tournament to Washington State. UCLA went 25-9 overall this season.

Sacramento State:  Sacramento State has won their last nine games, en route to their conference championship victory over Northern Arizona to earn their automatic bid. The Hornets went 25-7 overall this season and earned the No. 13 seed in the region. 

Oklahoma:  A conference foe, the Sooners went 25-6 this season and earned the No.5 seed in the region. Oklahoma went 2-0 in their matchups with the Mountaineers this season.

Portland: The Pilots went 23-8 this season, and upset Gonzaga in their conference championship to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. They will face UCLA in the first round.

USF: USF went 26-6 this season, winning their last four games of the regular season before being upset by Wichita State in the first round of the AAC Tournament. The Bulls earned a No. 8 seed in the region.

Marquette: Marquette went 21-10 this season, losing in the second round of the Big East Tournament to UCONN. The Golden Eagles earned a No. 9 seed and will face USF in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Norfolk State: Norfolk State went 26-6 and defeated Howard in the MEAC conference tournament championship to earn an automatic bid and the No. 16 seed in the region.
South Carolina: The Gamecoks earned the No. 1 overall seed in the bracket, not losing a game all season going 32-0 and defeating Tennessee in the SEC Tournament championship.
